(Aug. 26, 2008) -- When Alaska Airlines operated the last of its MD-80 passenger flights this past weekend, it also was a farewell of sorts for Alaska first officer Dana Haines. In the left seat of the MD-80, on a final flight from San Diego to Seattle, was her dad, Alaska Capt. Claude Tirman. Father and daughter had flown together in the same MD-80 cockpit for Alaska Airlines many times before, but they would never do so again. Like the plane nicknamed the "mad dog," Tirman, 60, was retiring from the airline after a career that started 26 years ago -- two years before the airline received its first MD-80. This was his final flight for Alaska.

(Aug. 25, 2008) -- Paul Tierney, 47, had claimed that South Lanarkshire Council should reimburse him the cost of paying for a private tutor - £250 - for his daughter Denise, 15, as there was no dedicated English teacher at her school for a three-month period in the run-up to her standard grade exams. However, while waiting for his case to proceed through the Hamilton small claims court, Mr Tierney, a toolmaker from East Kilbride, has been advised by the Scottish Government that, although there is a legal duty for schools to teach religious education and religious observance - and Gaelic in Gaelic speaking areas - no such duty exists for core subjects such as English and maths.

(Aug. 20, 2008) -- According to Heather McKechnie, a registered marriage and family therapist, parents must "learn to keep your mouth shut, and only offer your opinion when asked." And the same advice applies when dealing with most other issues pertaining to older teens. The key is accepting that most kids are going to do things and experiment, says McKechnie, and, even if you forbid them, they'll do it anyway. "It's developmental -- all part of learning and preparing."

(Aug. 16, 2008) -- "Me and my dad, we'd get into fights a lot," 13-year-old Faith said. He tried to check her eyes or talk to her when she was stoned. He watched the way she walked to see if she stumbled. One morning, she just didn't go to the mall. For whatever reason, she chose to stay home and play board games with her father.
"All of a sudden, cops came to the door," she says. She had just asked her father if he planned to send her to rehab, and he'd said no. In fact, he had gone to court and asked for an apprehension order so Faith would be taken to a safe house. As she went upstairs to her bedroom, this seemed like the ultimate betrayal. Coming back downstairs with the clothes she'd need for the next five days, Faith told her father not to talk to her.
