(July 8, 2008) -- In early June, Anna Spoden and her father, Clark, journeyed to Tanzania, Africa, to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the continent, rising just over 19,350 feet. The climb had a purpose. It was a fundraiser for two orphanages in Africa: Treasures of Africa orphanage and St. Bartholomew Orphanage in southern Sudan. Together, Anna and her dad have raised $9,000 online at their Web site and through a benefit party held downtown in May, and the fundraising efforts are still ongoing.

Dr David Cartlidge, 51, cleverly lay on his back to conserve energy and was eventually pulled into a lifeboat suffering from mild hypothermia. His rescuers on the four-strong Criccieth lifeboat crew included Paul Filby and his daughter Hope, 17, on her first shout.

She received a different kind of surprise party Monday, more than six months after her dad left. When the girl walked into the playroom filled with games to see her dad waiting, all she needed to know was that he was finally home again. Stunned and speechless, Ashley buried herself against her father's side.

At least a dozen callers to the Herald wanted to donate money or bikes to Roethler. Working with the 117-year-old timepiece is a big responsibility for the seventh-grader at Helfrich Park Middle School, but her father says she's up to it. "I started bringing Olivia many years ago," said Joe DeVoy, Vanderburgh County's volunteer Old Courthouse clock adjuster for 13 years. "She is my helper and has a part in the maintenance."
